My Story

Over the years I noticed kilos were piling on and I thought ‘I’ve done nothing different.  What could be doing this?’  I ignored it thinking like most people – it’s simply middle age. That’s what happens when middle age kicks in.  That’s the worst way you can think. In fact, simply allowing your waistline to expand with time is one of the most dangerous things you can do, but so easy and not noticeable.  After doing a bit of research, talking to others, talking to doctors, reading up about what happens to our bodies, I soon learned a few home truths, - things that most diets simply don’t address.

Mindset, Decision and Attitude

I’ve tried so many ‘diets’. From the cabbage soup diet, to the Atkins Diet, to a low fat calorie counting diet to all fruit one day to all meat the next diet. It all got to be depressing. I think I confused my body rather than try to make it thinner. Once I made up my mind to simply do it, it became easier.  BUT, I had to get disgusted with myself first and I needed to work on my mindset and my attitude to weight and health to get anywhere. After that first decision to improve, I had to make the decision of HOW it was going to happen.

Eat Fat to Lose Fat

Forget low fat foods and diets. Just about all foods that are marked ‘low fat’ have added sugar. Forget about worrying about calories and ditch the weighing, measuring, counting and starving yourself. The body must have the RIGHT fats to survive. Omega 3’s are essential for the absorption of nutrients. The body needs a wide variety of good old fashioned whole foods that our great grandmothers would have lived on. However in today’s fast paced, stressfilled world of processed and fast foods, this lifestyle can be tough.    

So what are the options? ....I looked at and tried a few and here are my findings:-

1.   Meal Delivery Programs.  Sure they work, taste great, super convenient.  However…..    many were cost prohibitive, were only based on calories, not health, AND the weight is just about guaranteed to flop straight back on when the program is over. You can’t stay on a meal delivery program long term.

2.    Shake and diet plans available in pharmacies and health food stores. Again, they work for immediate weightloss only. Very few deal with longterm health, none have high quality nutrients included, many need fibre purchased separately and almost none deal with weight related disease like Diabetes and Heart Disease.  You cannot stay on them for life.

3.    Cut down on "bad eating" and increased  my exercise. Didn’t work! I cut down on my sugar and alcohol intake.  I stopped eating chips at night. I (sort of) cut down on my portion sizes and I walked a little longer in the mornings. I dropped a couple of kilos, but as soon as Xmas time and birthdays and other occasions came along it was all over.

4.    Fad Diets.  Tried a couple. Starved myself for a few days, got crabby, weak, miserable and only lost fluid. Absolutely didn’t work. Tried another high protein one and the gas and stomach upsets and bad skin and bad breath were not nice at all. Just didn’t work.In fact, if I recall, I gained weight.

5.    Joined the gym and ate what I liked.  The gym got expensive, hated it and didn’t lose any weight because I came straight home and continued with my same old eating plan. If anything, because I worked so hard at the gym my appetite increased!

6.    Got a Personal Trainer to put me on his special diet. Tough, hard to do, unpleasant, felt hungry ALL the time and couldn’t find half the ‘exotic’ ingredients I needed to add to the meals. My willpower wasn’t strong enough to stay with it and I gave up.

Whatever you decide to go with, do your homework first. You could be harming yourself.    Before you jump in and decide on the latest 'diet', please consider the following.
